At least thirteen people killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
