British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages down to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
