Defense Department Investigation Finds Hegseth Put Troops in Danger with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense report has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing classified information in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in dispute included details about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for handling classified information.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be released later this week.
