England and Wales Drawn in the Same Group for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by sporting legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a pool once again, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six group winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
