Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a intense contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
